How would I make my split nail stop growing?

my nail split and i've had it for a while. i thought that if i trimmed it it would stop growing but it came back. it doesn't hurt.....it's just really annoying, it stops right before the area where all the nerves and blood vessels are .........what should do?How would I make my split nail stop growing?
cut a ';V'; around the split and wait for it to grow in, then grow it out using nail strengthening nail polish.
